Things to do

A trip to Yosemite is one that is full of adventure and fun for all. Here are some of our favorite activities in the surrounding area that will be sure to keep you entertained and inspired during your time in the Sierras and Yosemite.

Ride the Sugar Pine Railroad

Just a short walk away from our Inn and in fact started by the same couple who built the Inn, the Yosemite Mountain Sugar Pine Railroad is a historic railroad that offers visitors a chance to experience the magic of a traditional steam engine train. Ride into history where powerful locomotives once hauled massive log trains through the Sierra Mountains, where mighty lumberjacks felled the timber, and flumes carried lumber to the distant valley below.

Riders can book either an hour-long excursion through the beautiful forests of Yosemite, a dinner ride, or even a jazz ride, with live jazz musicians on board. Learn some of the amazing history of the surrounding area by booking here.

Horse Around

One of the best ways to experience Yosemite is from the back of a beautiful horse. Ride along trails that are hundreds of years old on the back of a beautiful trail horse, guided by an expert Yosemite cowboy.

Choose from a range of different trails and adventures to embark on and see some of Yosemite’s most special sights such as the towering trees and a sequoia that is over 2000 years old. Book your ride here now.

Hike through the Giant Sequoias

One of the most special things to do in Yosemite is hike through the Giant sequoias; some of the tallest trees in the world, with bases so large it would take a dozen people or more to wrap their arms around them.

See trees that have lived longer than twice the age of the country, or trees that were saplings when Rome was being built. These gentle giants lend the forests of Yosemite the feeling of being in a cathedral; their quiet and majestic presence have a spiritual quality of their own. One of our favorite places to see them is the Mariposa Grove of Giant Sequoias which is a truly special section of the park; with celebrity trees that have greeted travelers from all over the world world for hundreds of years.

Explore California’s Gold Rush History

The California Gold Rush has long been the subject of many a captivating novel, song, or tall tale. There is certainly something magical and astounding about the idea of a mineral bringing millions of people to California in such a short amount of time, dreaming of wealth beyond their wildest imagination.

Experience this magic for yourself and learn about some of the history of mining in California at the California State Mining and Mineral Museum and Park, where visitors can learn about California’s gorgeous legacy of mining and panning for gold and see such amazing objects as the Fricot “Nugget”, a rare and beautiful specimen of crystallized gold discovered in the American River in 1864 that weighs nearly 14 pounds!

Visit a Living Pioneer Town

Just south of our Inn is one of our favorite attractions; a pioneer town reconstructed to represent what life was like in the 1800s for people living in California, and includes several pioneer homes, schoolhouses, a
blacksmith shop, wagon display, and even part of an original lumber flume.

Fresno Flats is a journey back in time as volunteers in historically accurate clothing guide visitors through the various buildings in the town, explaining what life was like in the 1860’s for the intrepid settlers that decided to make California their home. A simpler type of life that is both charming and intriguing to experience and explore for yourself.
